Today we learnt that we get an allele for eye colour and hair colour and much more from each parent. We usually get at least one dominant allele from our parents. Also non- dominant alleles are present and can get passed down to our children though we don’t always know we have them, this is called recessive.

I have learned that homozygous is when you have two alleles that are both the same. For example if your mum and dad have homozygous brown eyes you will. If your dad has homozygous brown eyes and if your mum has blue eyes you will have brown eyes because brown is a more dominant gene. If both your mum and dad have blue eyes you will have blue eyes.

Today we looked at sexual intercourse and fertilisation. We watched a video where we also learned about puberty, periods, IVF, twins, and being pregnant and giving birth. These are some of the topics that we will look at in more detail in the next few lessons.

Today we looked at cystic fibrosis – one of the most common genetic diseases (and caused by a recessive allele) and we looked at Huntington’s disease – a much rarer condition that is caused by a dominant allele. Next week we will look at another common disorder – sickle cell anaemia.
