Scientists have revealed details of the world’s only known case of “semi-identical” twins.

Twins (anonymous) They are the result of two sperm cells fertilising a single egg, which then divided to form two embryos – and each sperm contributed genes to each child.

Belgian Blue cow

We looked at the subject of genetic engineering.

Animal breeders have been using selective breeding for centuries by artificially inseminating the biggest cows with each other. The Belgian blue cow took nearly 100 years of breeding to produce so much muscle.

Scientists are now starting to make transgenic organisms using DNA from separate species. It has been proved that this works by making a glow in the dark rabbit by inserting a gene from a jellyfish that fluoresces into rabbit DNA. However, lots of people are opposed to putting genes from one organism into another type of organism.

We also saw how clones of cattle are made using surrogate mothers (this is called embryo transplantation) and how Golden rice can be produced containing vitamin A (from daffodils and bacteria) which would stop millions of people going blind if it were legal.

We then saw some other uses of genetic engineering which included cows manufacturing human antibodies to fight disease and bacteria producing human insulin. We also saw the possibility of producing human tissue for ’spare parts’.

For Germination we put some broad beans in a jar with blotting paper and put the beans half way and filled a quarter of it up with water so that the blotting paper soaks up the water to germinate the beans .  We then placed some jars on the window sill and some in a cupboard. We will look at the jars after easter. love adam and jess xxx
