We have seen artificial selection in the Belgian Blue cow – breeders have selected which cows to inseminate with which bulls’ sperm. We have seen that over many generations this produces changes.
Natural selection happens naturally. It is the change in an organism so that it becomes more suited to its environment. Individual organisms cannot choose to be better suited – it is the result of chance and good luck that they have ‘fitter’ genes. As a result they are more likely to survive and breed, passing on their fitter genes so that they become more common. These genes may have been inherited at first from a mutation.
We looked at an example of natural selection in peppered moths.

Today we looked at how different sounds look on an oscilloscope.
We saw that loud sounds have taller waves and quiet sounds smaller waves. We also saw that high pitched sounds have waves that are close together (short wavelength) and low pitched sounds are further apart (longer wavelength)
The frequency of the sound wave is how many waves there are each second. This is measured in Hertz (Hz). High pitched sounds have a high frequency and low pitched sounds have a low frequency.
