Today we looked at digestive enzymes. These are chemicals that help break down large insoluble food molecules into smaller soluble molecules. We saw that enzymes are affected by pH.

This is an airlock used in home brewing. What does it do and why is it needed?

You should have filled in this sheet and answered the questions from pages 84 and 85 in the text book.

An important part of your knowledge is that you understand the effect of temperature on enzymes. We will be doing a practical on this tomorrow, but have a look at this link.

Talking about digestive enzymes, we also had a discussion about why chewing gum can be both good and bad for you. Have a look at my year 8 post today, and you might also be interested in Pavlov’s dog - a nice looking site which also has a game you can play to teach a dog to salivate at your command!
