Today we started to look at the process of photosynthesis. You need to be able to describe photosynthesis to pass this part of unit 1.

REMEMBER THIS:

Green plants contain the pigment chlorophyll in their leaves to trap sunlight. Carbon dioxide and water are also needed by the plant to make glucose, which is stored in the leaves as starch. Oxygen is a by product of the process.

Top tip

The equation for photosynthesis (water + carbon dioxide →glucose + oxygen) is the reverse of the equation for respiration.

pondweed-005.jpgThe equipment we used to see how the amount of light affects the amount of oxygen made by pondweed (pondweed is placed in the water, the distance from the lamp is measured and the number of bubbles of oxygen are counted in one minute) :-)
