We looked at the properties of calcium carbonate. This is the chemical found in limestone.
Heating calcium carbonate produces calcium oxide and carbon dioxide. This type of reaction is known as thermal decomposition (breaking down by heat).
Adding water to the calcium oxide produces slaked lime (calcium hydroxide). This is used to produce limewater when filtered, which can be used to test for carbon dioxide. (Carbon dioxide turns limewater milky)
Slaked lime is often added to lakes in Sweden. Do you know why?
