We looked at why our pulse increases standing up and during exercise. You need to be aware that it is to get more oxygen to respiring cells for the release of energy. Sometimes, enough oxygen cannot get to the cells and you build up an oxygen debt – You respire anaerobically, producing a lot less energy and lactic acid which is responsible for cramp. You need to get rid of this lactic acid as quickly as possible – this is why you see athletes breathing deeply after a race, long after it has finished. You should also know that the fitter you are, the quicker your pulse will return to normal. This is known as the recovery rate.

You should have completed at least 2 out of 3 of the activities on the sheets today , filled in the answers to the relevant questions and stuck this work in your book. The answers to the wordsearch if you need them are as follows: energy, lactic acid, oxygen, breathe, glucose, aerobic, anaerobic and pulse.

You should be able to write a word equation for aerobic and anaerobic respiration. You MUST KNOW THE DIFFERENCES between ANAEROBIC and AEROBIC respiration
