We saw today that adding salt to ice makes it melt, but also that the temperature compared to normal melting ice is much lower. This is because impurities change the melting and boiling points of pure substances. Pure water boils at 100 degrees celsius and pure ice melts / pure water freezes at 0 degrees celsius. Adding salt lowers the temperature at which the ice will melt. This is why salt is put on roads in winter (mixed with grit to increase friction). Do you know what effect salt has on the boiling point of water?
