Can you work out why only one of these ice cubes is melting? Isn’t the metal colder than the plastic tray? This is a naked science kitchen science experiment.

Todays experiment involves giving the same mass of water, aluminium and copper (1kg) the same amount of energy ( same voltage for same amount of time), and seeing how much hotter each material gets.

The energy needed to heat a kg of a material by 1 degree Celcius is called the specific heat capacity. The units are J/Kg/oC

Water has a very high specific heat capacity. This means that it is difficult to heat up, but once it is warm it will stay warm for a long time.
